Surprise, Surprise...

Al Qaeda's wing in Iraq on Thursday rejected as a fake a letter by top group leader Ayman al-Zawahri which was issued by U.S. officials this week, according to an Internet posting.

"We in Al Qaeda Organization announce that there is no truth to these claims, which are only based on the imagination of the politicians of the Black (White) House and their slaves," the group said in a statement posted on an Islamist Web site about the letter.

Who you gonna believe, the Director of National Intelligence or al Qaeda in Iraq?

Tough choice, huh?

  1. I say it was Karl Rove, or Scott McClellan, or maybe Jeff Gannon! making the call. The 1st time I heard of it, I said, "Scare tactics." And envisioned Chevy Chase on the phone on Weekend Update, saying "So, what are you wearing?" then hanging up guiltily.

Have you seen Juan Coles's analysis of the letter at Informed Comment? It seems that whoever wrote it used arabic greetings that al-Zawahri would have concidered personal insults (Shiite/Sunni thing). He figures it was either an American or Iranian forgery.

  4. Yes, William, just posted something on it. I lean toward the black propaganda theory, especially in light of what Central Command's saying about it; something to the effect that the letter proves we shouldn't pull out of Iraq.
